How ToolRank works

ToolRank is ToolPotion’s proprietary ranking engine.

It continuously evaluates hundreds of signals across the open web — real traffic and popularity, audience and community strength, authority and longevity, adoption and engagement — processing millions of data points to place every tool where it has earned to be.

Every AI type is measured by its own tailored model: what proves traction for a SaaS app is not what proves it for an open-source framework or a creator channel. Missing a platform never counts against a tool — ToolRank judges the evidence that exists.

No paid placement. No self-reported numbers.

Placement cannot be bought.

Best AI tools for marketers 2026: quick picks

If you only have 30 seconds, start with ChatGPT, the best overall pick. If your team already drafts in Claude, you don't need to switch.

Bar chart of ToolRank scores (0-100) for the top 8 scored tools for marketers on ToolPotion's 2026 leaderboard

Teams that live in Gmail and Docs will get more from Gemini 3.1 Pro.

Canva is the best free design tool, and its free plan comes with a monthly AI allowance (Canva pricing), so it's the one to hand a new hire on day one.

Campaign imagery is Midjourney's job. Put it in the budget from the start, because there's no free plan (Midjourney plans).

HeyGen is the answer when you need video without a shoot, whether that's a short explainer or a personalized outreach clip.

Marketing ops automation belongs to Zapier, which builds AI workflows and agents across the apps you already run.

For anything more specialized, browse the full marketer board. The leaderboard above stops at #25, and the full board runs to #250.

What changed for marketing AI in 2026

Zapier's change is the one most likely to hit your budget, since AI steps inside it now bill by model. Meta added optional paid tiers on top of its free assistant. The model releases from Google and Anthropic matter differently, because they change what you get from the plans you already have. Avatar video also got easier to pilot. Elsewhere, ElevenLabs cut self-serve creative pricing by up to 40% alongside its Music v2 release, and Midjourney's V8.1 became the default model in June.

The assistant model race raised the baseline

Google announced Gemini 3.1 Pro on February 19, 2026. Google says it scores 77.1% on ARC-AGI-2, which it calls more than double the reasoning performance of 3 Pro, and it's rolling out across the Gemini app, AI Studio, Vertex AI and Gemini Enterprise (Google).

Anthropic moved in summer. Claude Opus 5 launched July 24, 2026 at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens, and Sonnet 5 (released June 30) became the default model for Free and Pro users (Anthropic). For most marketing teams, the Sonnet 5 switch matters more than the Opus launch, because Free and Pro users got it without changing plans.

For an in-house team, that means you should re-run the prompts that fell flat on older models before you buy extra seats or a second assistant.

Avatar video got easier to try

In April 2026, HeyGen launched Avatar V, which builds a realistic avatar from a single 15-second recording, and it became the first avatar platform to integrate ByteDance's Seedance 2.0. Its free plan allows 3 videos a month, each capped at 1 minute, with 1 custom avatar (HeyGen updates).

That's enough for a real pilot of HeyGen's avatar videos. Record one product marketer, cut three 60-second explainers, and compare watch-through against the screen recordings you publish today. Get written consent from anyone whose face or voice becomes an avatar, and check local law on synthetic likenesses before anything goes live.

Pricing moved to usage and subscriptions

AI steps in automations now cost more tasks on higher model tiers. Starting June 15, 2026, "AI by Zapier" steps use model-based pricing that counts as 1x to 5x normal task usage depending on the model and tools tier, and they're only available on paid plans (Zapier help).

Meta went the subscription route this year with Meta One: Core at $7.99/month and Premium at $19.99/month, with the subscriptions adding more image and video generation. Meta also says Meta AI will still be free for everyday use (Meta).

So a flat seat price won't tell you what AI costs anymore. Before you scale a workflow, count the AI steps each run fires and the model tier each one calls, then multiply by monthly volume. A Zap that runs an AI step 2,000 times a month at the 5x rate uses 10,000 tasks.

What the 2026 leaderboard tells marketers

Six elite tools, then a clear drop

Four of the six elite tools at the top of the 2026 board are general assistants: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini 3.1 Pro and Meta AI. The other two are Midjourney and the Perplexity answer engine, and all six score between 90 and 96.

After those six, the scores drop sharply. Runway is the next scored tool at #10, and it has a 78. That's 12 points below Perplexity's 90.

Keep two things in mind when you read the leaderboard above. Ties are common (four tools from #14 to #17 all have 74). Some entries are ranked but don't have a score yet, like Canva at #4 and ElevenLabs at #9.

Video tools are the biggest group from #10 to #25

Seven of the 16 entries in that range are video tools: Runway, HeyGen, PixVerse, invideo, Descript, Synthesia and Pika. Every scored entry in the range has a score from 73 to 78, and all of them are in the strong tier.

That range is narrow. A 76 for HeyGen against a 73 for Synthesia is too small a gap to decide on. Choose between them based on the format you need and what you can pay.

Strong tools are still well above the typical tool on this board, which averages 57.1. Even Pika's 73, the lowest score in the top 25, is almost 16 points above that average.

About ToolRank

ToolRank is ToolPotion's proprietary ranking engine for AI tools, and nobody can pay for a spot on it. This board ranks 2,088 entries and publishes the top 250. You can see all ToolRank leaderboards for other roles and industries.

Mini-reviews of the all-purpose assistants

Three of these five can be your main drafting tool. Meta AI and Perplexity each cover a narrower job, so treat them as add-ons.

ChatGPT is the default pick for most teams

ChatGPT is OpenAI's general assistant, and it handles writing, coding help, image generation and voice chats in one app. You can draft a launch email and generate its hero image without leaving it. For harder visuals, image generation has a thinking mode for complex prompts. Deep research pulls from web sources and returns a structured report, which makes a decent first pass at a competitor brief.

OpenAI sells Free ($0), Go ($8/month), Plus ($20/month) and Pro (from $100/month), plus Business at $20/user/month billed annually for two or more seats (ChatGPT pricing). With that many tiers, it's easy to overbuy. For a solo marketer, Plus is the sensible stopping point, and Pro is hard to justify for content work. Once a second person needs a seat, go to Business. It costs the same $20 per head as Plus, but you have to commit to annual billing.

Claude for long-form writing and brand voice

Claude is Anthropic's assistant. It writes and edits content, generates code, searches the web, turns your data into charts and remembers context across conversations. That memory helps when you're refining the same brand voice over several weeks of drafts.

Team is $20 or $100 per seat per month, and Max starts at $100/month for 5x or 20x Pro usage (Claude pricing).

Campaign visuals still need a separate tool like Midjourney or Canva, so budget for one alongside Claude if imagery is part of your week.

Gemini 3.1 Pro fits teams that live in Gmail and Docs

On the board, Google AI Pro is listed at $19.99/month and includes Gemini 3.1 Pro with usage limits Google says are 4x higher than without a plan, plus Gemini in Gmail and Docs and Deep Research. That Gmail and Docs access is the main reason to pick it, because Gemini sits inside the apps your team opens every morning.

It also has a 1M-token context window, and video generation runs on Veo 3.1 Lite.

If your team works in Microsoft 365 or Notion, most of that advantage disappears, and ChatGPT or Claude is the better buy.

Meta AI covers free image ideas

Meta AI generates images from a text prompt for free, so it's a no-cost way to rough out visual concepts. If you outgrow that, Meta One Core at $7.99/month adds more image and video generation (Meta).

Keep it to moodboard sketches and thumbnail ideas, then build the final asset in a design tool your team shares.

Perplexity for fast, sourced research

Perplexity gives real-time answers to research questions, which fits the checks marketers run every week, like what a competitor just changed on its pricing page or whether a trend is picking up. When you need a quick brief before a planning meeting, it saves you from working through a page of search results.

A cited answer can still be wrong. Open the source links and confirm every number before it goes into a client deck.

The specialist leaders: design, imagery, voice, video and automation

Your assistant covers words and research. Each of the seven tools below is built for one job, and all of them sit in the top 13 of the 2026 board. If you can add only one, make it Canva.

Canva for on-brand social and campaign assets

Canva covers social posts, presentations, posters and video in one editor, and it has a Brand Kit for storing your logos and colors. The free plan includes 1,000+ design types and 4.7M+ media assets. Its AI allowance is tight: up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses a month, with no Ultra access (Canva pricing).

You can burn through twenty AI uses in one campaign sprint. Canva Pro costs US$144 a year per person and gives you roughly 10x the AI (about 200 Premium or 20 Ultra uses a month) plus 100GB of storage. Teams shipping assets every week usually end up on Pro.

Midjourney makes the hero images

Midjourney's 2026 ToolRank score of 92 (elite) is the highest of any tool in this section. Use it when a campaign needs a hero image that stops people scrolling.

You have to pay before you try it. Basic is $10 a month, Standard $30, Pro $60 and Mega $120, and Standard and above include unlimited Relax Mode (Midjourney plans). Once you have the image, add the headline and logo in Canva. Standard is the sensible starting point, because unlimited Relax Mode covers the rounds of exploratory generations.

Grammarly cleans up copy across your apps

Grammarly works in the apps and websites where your copy gets published, which is why it's worth having alongside a full assistant.

Free fixes spelling and grammar and includes 100 AI prompts a month. Pro costs $12 a month, raises that to 2,000 prompts, and adds full-sentence rewrites plus plagiarism and AI-content detection (Grammarly plans).

For briefs and first drafts, stick with ChatGPT or Claude, and let Grammarly clean up what they produce. For most marketers the free plan is enough, but if you publish client work, the plagiarism check makes Pro worth paying for.

ElevenLabs handles voiceovers and localized audio

ElevenLabs is the pick for voiceovers on ads and product demos. It supports 70+ languages, so you can turn one script into a version for each market without booking a studio in each one.

The free plan gives you 10,000 credits a month, Starter is $6 for 30,000, and Business tops out at $990 for 6,000,000. Unused credits roll over, up to 2x your monthly quota (ElevenLabs pricing).

Voice cloning is where you need to be careful. Only clone a voice you have written permission to use, and check your local law before you put a cloned voice in an ad.

Runway covers AI video generation and editing

Runway generates and edits video, images and audio in the cloud, and you can build custom workflows without writing code. Use it for generated b-roll and short video ads.

The free plan is 125 one-time credits. Standard costs $12 a month for 625 credits, which is about 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 video, and Max costs $76 for 9,500 credits with rollover, or about 791 seconds (Runway pricing). One 30-second spot with a couple of retakes can use up a month of Standard. A weekly video habit points toward Max.

HeyGen for avatar and spokesperson video

Pick HeyGen for product walkthroughs and personalized outreach where you want a presenter you never have to reshoot. The Avatar V model covered above builds that presenter from one short recording.

Treat the free plan as a trial. The 3-video monthly cap is enough to see whether an avatar suits your brand and too thin to run a campaign on.

Zapier ties the stack together

Zapier is how the tools above connect to your CRM and ad accounts. It works with over 9,000 apps, so a form fill can trigger an AI-written follow-up without anyone copying text between tabs.

The free plan includes 100 tasks a month and basic access to AI Agents and Chatbots, while AI steps need a paid plan and use the model-based task counts described in the pricing section above. Routine steps like tagging leads rarely need an expensive model, and a cheaper one makes your task allowance last longer.

How to choose the right AI tools for your marketing team

Buy one elite assistant first. Then add one or two specialists that close the biggest gap in what your team ships. Six overlapping subscriptions that nobody owns is how an AI budget leaks.

Start with one assistant, then add specialists

If you're buying seats for a team, compare the team plans. At five seats, ChatGPT Business on annual billing (ChatGPT pricing) and the lower Claude Team tier (Claude pricing) both come to about $100 a month.

Next, list what your team publishes every week. The item that takes the most hours tells you which specialist to buy. If it isn't among these 25, browse every marketing AI tool in our directory.

Solo marketer or tight budget

If you're on your own, run on free tiers and upgrade whichever one you outgrow first. Canva, Grammarly and ElevenLabs all have free plans, and Meta AI stays free for everyday use. Pricing details for each are in the reviews above.

In-house content and brand team

For most content teams, the gap is visual volume. Pick Midjourney if your campaigns need imagery nobody else has, and budget for a paid plan from day one. Pick Canva Pro instead if most of the work is resizing on-brand assets for every channel.

For pitch and campaign decks, add Gamma for presentations.

Video is the harder choice, so buy only one video tool. HeyGen is the better pick for spokesperson clips on social. Synthesia suits training-style business video in more than 160 languages. For a wider shortlist, the top AI tools for brand managers board shares 23 of its top 50 with this one.

Growth, ops and automation-heavy teams

On these teams, how your tools connect matters more than which assistant you pick. Zapier has three times the integrations of Make, which has 3,000+ and a drag-and-drop visual builder that suits ops people who like to see every branch of a workflow.

For go-to-market research, add Clay. It combines 150+ data sources with AI research agents and syncs the results to your ad platforms and CRM. If you also run the business side, check the AI tools ranked for business owners.

Five checks to run before you pay

  1. Check whether it's priced per seat or by credits. Seat costs are predictable, while credit and usage bills rise with every busy launch week.
  2. Test whether you can finish a real campaign asset on the free tier or trial, rather than only a demo.
  3. Confirm it connects to the CMS, CRM, ad accounts and chat app you already use.
  4. Check what control you get over your data and brand. Ask whether your prompts train the vendor's models and whether you can lock logos and colors.
  5. Find out who owns the tool. If nobody on the team is responsible for it, expect an unused seat by renewal time.

The rest of the top 25 and names worth watching

Every scored tool ranked 11 to 25 is strong tier, and most of them do one job. Microsoft Copilot (#19) is the exception, since it's a general assistant. Video takes up much of this stretch, so pick one video generator from it and skip the others. HeyGen and Zapier are left out of the table because each has its own review.

Checklist of four dos and two don'ts for building a lean AI marketing stack in 2026: one assistant plus one or two specialists

Ranks 11 to 25 in brief

25Pika73, strongGenerating videos and animating photos

Gamma has the highest score in this group at 77. It builds presentations, websites and social content from an outline or existing notes, so a campaign brief can become a first-draft pitch deck. If you cut podcasts or talking-head clips, pick Descript, because you edit the footage by deleting words from the transcript.

Make is the second automation platform in the top 25, two points behind Zapier on score. For video, you probably need only one of PixVerse, invideo, Synthesia and Pika. Choose Synthesia if you're producing training or product videos you'll localize.

Just outside the top 25

Four tools ranked between 26 and 40 on the marketers board are worth watching. Photoroom (#26) automates product photo editing for e-commerce and social media. Jasper (#27) lets marketing teams run AI agents across whole workflows. Klaviyo (#28) is a B2C CRM that automates email, SMS, WhatsApp and mobile push. Profound (#32) helps brands show up in AI-generated answers, so track it if your buyers ask chatbots what to buy.

Agency teams should check the board of AI tools for marketing and creative agencies, which shares 28 tools in its top 50 with this one. If you mostly make social video, try the best AI tools for content creators, with 21 shared. Social leads can use the Top 250 AI Tools for Social Media Managers board (17 shared).

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI tool for marketers in 2026?

ChatGPT is #1 on the 2026 marketer leaderboard with a ToolRank score of 96 (elite), and Claude is #2 on the same score. If you're starting with one tool, pick ChatGPT, because its Free, Go and Plus tiers let you move up in small steps (prices are in the review above). If your team works in Gmail and Docs all day, pick Gemini 3.1 Pro (#3, score 93) instead, since it works inside the Google apps you already use.

Are there free AI tools for marketers that are actually useful?

Yes. Most of the top 10 have a free option, including ChatGPT Free (ChatGPT pricing) and Claude Free (Claude pricing). Among the specialists, Canva's free plan includes up to 20 Standard/Premium AI uses a month (Canva pricing), Grammarly Free gives you 100 AI prompts a month plus tone detection (Grammarly plans), and ElevenLabs Free includes 10,000 credits a month for voiceovers (ElevenLabs pricing). For image ideas, Meta AI generates images from text prompts for free. Skip Midjourney if you need a free image generator, since it has no free plan (Midjourney plans).

Is ChatGPT or Claude better for marketing work?

They're level on the 2026 leaderboard: ChatGPT is #1, Claude is #2, and both are elite on the same score. Price won't decide it for most people, since both paid entry plans cost about $20/month. Pick ChatGPT if the $8/month Go plan is enough for you, because Claude has no tier that cheap. Claude's strengths are writing and editing, data visualization and memory across conversations, which helps when you refine one brand voice over weeks.

Which AI tool is best for creating marketing videos?

Runway is the highest-scored video tool on the 2026 marketer board, at #10 with a ToolRank score of 78 (strong). Its Standard plan is $12/month for about 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 video (Runway pricing). For talking-head explainers and personalized outreach, pick HeyGen (#12, score 76). Its free plan covers a small pilot, as described in the avatar section above.

How much should a marketing team budget for AI tools in 2026?

Plan on about $32 per person per month for a basic setup. That covers ChatGPT Business at $20/user/month billed annually for 2+ seats (ChatGPT pricing) and Canva Pro at US$144/year, which works out to $12/month (Canva pricing). Grammarly Pro at $12/month (Grammarly plans) is an optional add-on if you publish client work. Add Runway Standard at $12/month if one person handles video (Runway pricing), and set money aside for automation, because Zapier's AI steps need a paid plan and bill by model. Heavy users cost more: ChatGPT Pro and Claude Max both start at $100/month.

How is the ToolRank leaderboard different from other best AI tools lists?

The ToolRank marketer board ranks 2,088 AI tools and publishes the top 250. Scored tools get a 0-100 ToolRank score and a tier, from elite down to nascent, and no one can pay for a spot. The board is kept up to date through the year. Check rank and score together, since some ranked tools, like Canva at #4, don't have a score yet.
