Description
StyleSwin is an official implementation of a transformer-based Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) for high-resolution image synthesis, presented at CVPR 2022. The project explores the potential of pure transformers in generative modeling, addressing the challenge that transformers have not yet matched ConvNets' performance in high-resolution image generation.

The core innovation of StyleSwin lies in its architecture, which utilizes Swin transformers within a style-based framework. To enhance both efficiency and modeling capacity, it introduces a 'double attention' mechanism. This approach simultaneously considers the context of local and shifted windows, leading to improved image generation quality. Furthermore, StyleSwin incorporates absolute positional information, which is often lost in window-based transformers, significantly benefiting the generation process.
The model is designed to be scalable to high resolutions, with both coarse geometry and fine structures benefiting from the expressivity of transformers. A key challenge addressed is the occurrence of blocking artifacts during high-resolution synthesis, which can arise from local attention operating in a block-wise manner and disrupting spatial coherence. StyleSwin tackles this by employing a wavelet discriminator that examines spectral discrepancies, effectively suppressing these artifacts.
Extensive experiments demonstrate StyleSwin's superiority over existing transformer-based GANs, particularly at high resolutions like 1024x1024. It outperforms StyleGAN on CelebA-HQ 1024x1024 and achieves comparable performance on FFHQ 1024x1024, highlighting the promise of transformers for high-resolution image generation without requiring complex training strategies.
The repository provides code for generating image samples, evaluating FID scores, and training new models on various datasets including FFHQ, CelebA-HQ, and LSUN Church at different resolutions. It also includes quantitative results showing low FID scores for generated images across different datasets and resolutions. The project emphasizes responsible AI considerations, cautioning against misuse for impersonation and encouraging fair data practices.
