Description
FastSpeech 2 represents a significant advancement in non-autoregressive text-to-speech (TTS) technology, building upon the foundation of its predecessor, FastSpeech. While FastSpeech offered faster synthesis compared to autoregressive models, it relied on a complex and time-consuming teacher-student distillation pipeline. This process, along with the accuracy of duration prediction and potential information loss during data simplification, limited the achievable voice quality.

FastSpeech 2 addresses these limitations by adopting a more direct training approach. Instead of relying on a teacher model's distilled output, it trains directly with ground-truth target data. Crucially, it introduces additional variation information as conditional inputs, including pitch, energy, and more accurate duration predictions. These extracted features are used during training and predicted during inference, allowing the model to better capture the nuances of human speech and solve the inherent one-to-many mapping problem in TTS, where a single text can correspond to multiple speech variations.
Further innovation is seen in FastSpeech 2s, which pioneers the direct generation of speech waveforms from text in a parallel manner. This fully end-to-end inference capability significantly boosts synthesis speed. Experimental results demonstrate that FastSpeech 2 achieves a threefold increase in training speed compared to FastSpeech, with FastSpeech 2s offering even faster inference. In terms of voice quality, both FastSpeech 2 and 2s outperform FastSpeech, with FastSpeech 2 even surpassing the quality of traditional autoregressive models.
The model's architecture allows for the direct integration of acoustic features, leading to more expressive and natural-sounding speech. This makes it suitable for a wide range of applications requiring high-quality, fast speech synthesis. The ability to control and predict variations in pitch and energy opens up possibilities for more dynamic and customized voice outputs, moving beyond static speech generation.
