Description
OpenMAIC (Open Multi-Agent Interactive Classroom) is an open-source AI education platform developed by the THU-MAIC team at Tsinghua University. It transforms any topic description or uploaded document into an immersive, interactive classroom experience using multi-agent orchestration with LLM-driven AI teachers, teaching assistants, and classmates that simulate the social dynamics of a real classroom.

OpenMAIC generates lessons through a two-stage pipeline: it first analyzes the input and produces a structured lesson outline, then transforms each outline item into rich scenes such as narrated slides, quizzes with AI grading, interactive HTML simulations, or project-based learning activities. AI agents lecture with natural voice narration, spotlight and laser-pointer effects, and draw on a shared whiteboard in real time. Dynamic engagement modes, powered by a LangGraph state machine, include classroom discussion, roundtable debate among agents with different viewpoints, and free Q&A. Students can respond by voice through speech recognition, and lessons can be exported to editable PowerPoint or self-contained interactive HTML.
The platform supports multiple LLM providers, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, DeepSeek, and any OpenAI-compatible API, with Gemini 3 Flash recommended for balance and Gemini 3.1 Pro for highest quality. It is built on Next.js, React, and TypeScript, and can be deployed to Vercel, Docker, or self-hosted infrastructure, with OpenClaw integration letting users generate classrooms from messaging apps like Feishu, Slack, Telegram, and WhatsApp.
OpenMAIC is grounded in research published in the Journal of Computer Science and Technology (JCST 2026) and validated with over 700 students at Tsinghua across more than two years. It is free and open-source under the AGPL-3.0 license, so users can use, modify, self-host, and contribute.
