Description

Hermes Agent is an open-source autonomous AI agent built by Nous Research, the lab behind the Hermes, Nomos, and Psyche model families. Unlike coding copilots tied to an IDE or chatbot wrappers around a single API, it runs on your own infrastructure, remembers what it learns across sessions, and becomes more capable the longer it runs.

It uses a closed learning loop: agent-curated memory with FTS5 full-text recall and LLM summarization, autonomous creation of procedural skills from experience, skill self-improvement during use, and dialectic user modeling. Skills are portable and shareable through the agentskills.io hub. Hermes Agent ships with 40+ built-in tools — web search, file operations, terminal commands, image generation, TTS, and vision — plus MCP integration to connect any MCP server, and a built-in cron scheduler that can deliver reports and run tasks to any platform. It reaches you across CLI, Telegram, Discord, Slack, and WhatsApp from a single gateway.

Built for flexibility, it supports six terminal backends (local, Docker, SSH, Daytona, Singularity, Modal), so it can run on a $5 VPS, a GPU cluster, or serverless infrastructure that costs nearly nothing when idle. It works with Nous Portal, OpenRouter, OpenAI, or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint, is fully open source and free to self-host with no usage limits, and installs in about 60 seconds on Linux, macOS, or WSL2.
