Description
Reinforcement learning (RL) agents often face challenges with task-specific learning and sample efficiency. Plan2Explore addresses these limitations by introducing a novel self-supervised reinforcement learning approach. This agent is engineered to excel in exploration and to adapt quickly to new, unseen tasks without prior knowledge.

During its exploration phase, Plan2Explore distinguishes itself from previous methods by proactively using planning to discover novel states. Instead of retrospectively assessing observation novelty after reaching them, the agent strategically seeks out expected future novelty. This planning-driven exploration allows for more efficient data collection and a richer understanding of the environment.
Following the exploration phase, Plan2Explore demonstrates remarkable adaptability. It can be rapidly fine-tuned for multiple downstream tasks, such as standing, walking, or running, using only zero or a few task-specific interactions. This capability significantly reduces the need for extensive task-specific training data and interaction, making it highly versatile.
The agent has been rigorously evaluated on complex control tasks that involve high-dimensional image inputs. In these evaluations, Plan2Explore achieved superior performance compared to existing self-supervised exploration methods, even when operating without any training supervision or task-specific rewards. Its performance closely approached that of an oracle agent that had access to rewards, highlighting its effectiveness.
Plan2Explore's architecture allows it to first learn a global world model through self-supervised exploration, independent of any task-specific rewards. Once this foundational model is established, the agent can then adapt to various reward functions for different tasks, showcasing a powerful separation of exploration and exploitation learning.
The project provides an open-source implementation of Plan2Explore in Tensorflow, available on GitHub, encouraging further research and development in the field of self-supervised reinforcement learning. This release facilitates easy access for researchers and practitioners to experiment with and build upon the Plan2Explore framework.
