Description
Bias Shield is a browser extension designed to combat bias in machine translation, specifically integrating with Google Translate and DeepL Translator. It aims to provide users with more equitable and accurate translations by addressing gender bias and forms of address.

The extension offers two primary debiasing tools. The first, DeBiasByUs, allows users to report gender-biased translations directly to a project that is building a comprehensive database of such instances. Furthermore, Bias Shield proactively warns users when a translation has been previously flagged as gender-biased and, if available, presents an unbiased alternative.
The second integrated tool is Fairslator, an application that automatically detects and corrects machine translation biases related to gender and forms of address. By plugging Fairslator directly into Google Translate and DeepL Translator, Bias Shield enables users to benefit from its debiasing capabilities without leaving the translator's interface. This seamless integration ensures that users can experience improved translation quality and fairness with minimal disruption.
Bias Shield follows recommended practices for Chrome extensions and is offered by developer Michal Měchura. The developer has disclosed that they will not collect or use user data, and that data will not be sold to third parties or used for purposes unrelated to the extension's core functionality. This commitment to privacy is a key aspect of the extension's design, ensuring user trust and data security.
The extension is suitable for anyone who relies on machine translation for professional or personal use and is concerned about the potential for bias in the output. This includes researchers, students, international communicators, and individuals working with multilingual content. By providing tools to identify and mitigate bias, Bias Shield empowers users to engage with translated content more critically and confidently.
