Description
MusicGen Large is a sophisticated AI model designed for text-to-music generation, developed by the FAIR team of Meta AI. It leverages a single-stage auto-regressive Transformer model trained over a 32kHz EnCodec tokenizer with four codebooks sampled at 50 Hz. Unlike other models such as MusicLM, MusicGen does not require a self-supervised semantic representation, allowing it to generate all four codebooks in one pass. This innovative approach introduces a small delay between codebooks, enabling parallel prediction and reducing the auto-regressive steps to just 50 per second of audio.

The model was trained between April 2023 and May 2023 and is available in different sizes, including the large version with 3.3 billion parameters. MusicGen is intended primarily for research purposes, focusing on AI-based music generation. It aims to advance understanding of generative models and improve the state of science in this field. The primary users are researchers in audio, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, as well as amateurs interested in exploring AI models.
MusicGen Large has been evaluated using objective metrics such as Frechet Audio Distance and Kullback-Leibler Divergence, demonstrating its performance on standard music benchmarks. However, the model has limitations, including its inability to generate realistic vocals and its reduced performance with non-English descriptions. It also reflects biases from the training data, which may not represent all music cultures equally.
The model is released under the MIT license for code and CC-BY-NC 4.0 for model weights. Users are encouraged to explore its capabilities through the Hugging Face and Audiocraft libraries, with detailed documentation available for further guidance.
