Description
Instant Neural Graphics Primitives with a Multiresolution Hash Encoding presents a novel approach to accelerate the training and evaluation of neural graphics primitives. Traditionally, these primitives, parameterized by fully connected neural networks, can be computationally expensive. This new encoding method significantly reduces these costs by allowing the use of smaller neural networks without compromising quality. The core innovation lies in augmenting a small neural network with a multiresolution hash table of trainable feature vectors.

These feature vectors are optimized through stochastic gradient descent. The multiresolution structure of the hash table is crucial, as it enables the network to effectively disambiguate hash collisions. This results in a simple yet powerful architecture that is highly parallelizable on modern GPUs. The system leverages this parallelism through fully-fused CUDA kernels, meticulously designed to minimize wasted bandwidth and compute operations. This optimization leads to a speedup of several orders of magnitude, making it possible to train high-quality neural graphics primitives in seconds and render them in milliseconds at resolutions like 1920x1080.
The encoding is task-agnostic, meaning the same implementation and hyperparameters can be used across various applications, with only the hash table size being adjusted to balance quality and performance. This versatility makes it applicable to diverse tasks such as representing gigapixel images, learning signed distance functions (SDF) in 3D space, reconstructing volumetric radiance and density fields for NeRF (Neural Radiance Fields), and directly learning denoised radiance and density fields from volumetric path tracing. The benefits of instant training, high quality, and architectural simplicity are consistently demonstrated across these applications.
