Description
Viral AI is a federated network for genomic surveillance and infectious disease research, built by DNAstack on its Omics AI platform. It gives researchers and public health labs a way to browse, search, and query viral genome collections shared by contributing organizations around the world.

Because the network is federated, participating labs and agencies connect and share data without moving it out of their own systems, which lets sensitive genomic data stay under its owner's control while still being discoverable and queryable across the network. The platform implements open standards from the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH) and other recognized standards bodies, and is built with privacy, security, and interoperability as core design goals.
Viral AI has processed and shared more than 1.6 million SARS-CoV-2 genomes through its network. Genome Canada, one organization built on DNAstack's underlying Omics AI platform, has used it to create a national, GA4GH-compliant, cloud-based system for processing and sharing hundreds of thousands of viral sequences.
Viral AI is built for genomic researchers, public health authorities, and contributing laboratories working on infectious disease surveillance, rather than for general consumers, and access to the platform runs through its network of contributing organizations rather than the kind of open public sign-up found on a typical consumer app.
DNAstack describes its broader approach as federated by design: it connects, protects, and enables AI-powered discoveries across distributed datasets without moving them out of their source systems. Viral AI is one of several such research networks DNAstack powers, alongside similarly structured networks for neuroscience and other domains, all built on the same underlying Omics AI platform and the same commitment to open standards and interoperability that DNAstack applies across its federated network offerings. The platform's own data catalog describes it plainly: genomic surveillance and infectious disease data, openly shared across the labs and agencies that choose to take part.

How to use Viral AI?
Join as a contributing lab: Connect an organization's genomic data to the Viral AI network.
Browse shared collections: Explore viral genome datasets shared by other contributing labs.
Search and query: Look up specific sequences or genomic patterns across the network.
Track surveillance signals: Follow trends in viral genomic data relevant to a research question.
Keep data in place: Data stays within its own system, connected but not copied, under the federated model.
Viral AI's Use Cases
