Every joke Pengoo evaluates is placed on a continuous score, called theta (θ), derived by comparing 2.13 million jokes against each other in pairs and ranking them with the TrueSkill algorithm, the same approach used to rank players in competitive games. Alongside the score, each joke is tagged against a taxonomy of 36 distinct comic mechanisms, such as reversal, exaggeration, irony and misdirection, so a rating is tied to a specific structural reason rather than a model's improvised opinion. Scores are only comparable within the same language: Pengoo runs separate English and Chinese scales.
Pengoo also studies how mechanisms combine, using a co-occurrence measure (lift) that shows when two mechanisms land together more often than chance would predict. On its published data, combinations like reversal with misdirection, or absurdity with reversal, score well above that baseline, which Pengoo treats as a sign of a stronger joke rather than a coincidence.
The auto-judge tool scores a joke on the theta scale. The diagnose tool explains why a specific joke works, or doesn't. The find tool searches an underlying library of jokes for material close to a phrase or topic. The slogan generator turns a rough idea, such as a description of a small business, into a sharper, more memorable line, and can also sharpen an existing slogan.
The underlying dataset totals more than 2 million theta-scored entries, with 536,000 curated jokes checked against the score and taxonomy, and a high-confidence subset of 56,000 entries with tighter statistical certainty.
